The East Bay, Bjørvika
The Manhatten of Oslo?
In 1999 the City Council decided to redevelop the waterfront of Oslo, ‘The Fiord City’, containing housing, cultural and commercial buildings as well as public areas. When completed, we will enjoy a walk (jog!) or bicycle from the East to the West of the Oslo Waterfront.
The first building to be completed in Bjørvika was the National Opera and Ballet designed by the Norwegian architects Snøhetta, 2008. Since then a number of modern buildings of high architectural standard have been completed and construction will go on to 2020 or possibly longer. In 2015 the award winning projects for the new Edvard Munch Museum and the Deichman Library started on site (estimated completion 2019/20).
