Local Breweries, beerhouses and backyards
A walk through the history of mead, beer and breweries of 1800 Oslo.
The history of beer goes back more than 5000 years which makes the oldest ‘drink’ humans have produced. The Vikings drank Mead and had very strict codes for brewing, most of these taken up by the Catholic church when Norway was christened some 1000 years ago.
Our tour starts at a local beerhouse and the history of beer, then a taster of Mead (’On the House!) before we proceed through the part of 1850’s working-class area. Stopping for more taster and the history of the many breweries that existed in Oslo between 1830 and 1920.
“A good local pub has much in common with a church, except that the pub is warmer and conversation is easier.” William Blake (1757 – 1827), English poet and painter.
